Mixed Doubles Entry Leaves Alex Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime Waiting On Rankings

Eala and Auger-Aliassime await rankings, Canadian Open results, and possible US Open wildcard.

Published

on

Alex Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime have entered the US Open Mixed Doubles, but their place in the field is not assured.

A strong list of teams has already put pressure on the cutoff. Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper, Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter, and Casper Ruud and Iga Swiatek are among the pairs on the entry list, leaving several prominent names outside the guaranteed positions, including Eala and Auger-Aliassime.

Only a handful of teams have already locked up their places through rankings. Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic, Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz, Diana Shnaider and Daniil Medvedev, Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli, and Amanda Anisimova and Learner Tien are all confirmed.

The top 12 teams in the rankings will gain direct entry, and the cutoff arrives on Monday, August 17th. That means the Canadian Open could prove decisive for Eala and Auger-Aliassime, with results in both the men’s and women’s draws shaping the final list.

The scenarios are straightforward. If Iga Swiatek wins, Casper Ruud and Iga Swiatek qualify. If Elena Rybakina or Coco Gauff win, Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik qualify. If Elina Svitolina wins Toronto and Brandon Nakashima wins Montreal, Alex Eala and Felix Auger-Aliassime qualify. If Elina Svitolina wins Toronto and Brandon Nakashima does not win Montreal, Andrey Rublev and Mirra Andreeva qualify.

For Eala and Auger-Aliassime, the cleanest route is simple: if Elina Svitolina and Brandon Nakashima both win, they will be in on their joint ranking. Svitolina is set to meet Iga Swiatek in the semi-finals, while Nakashima faces Rafael Jodar for a place in the final, so nothing is settled yet.

Even if they miss the ranking cutoff, the pair still appear well placed. Eala has been one of the most popular players on the WTA Tour this year, drawing large crowds in Melbourne, Abu Dhabi, Wimbledon, and most recently at the Canadian Open. With a large Filipino community in New York, she is expected to attract major attention at Flushing Meadows.

If they do not earn entry on ranking, a wildcard would appear the likeliest outcome. Eala previously played the US Open in 2025, when she claimed her first Grand Slam match win against Clara Tauson in the opening round.

Shelton Stays Perfect in Montreal as Canadian Swing Reshapes the ATP Rankings

Shelton defended his Montreal title and climbed to world No 6 after a strong week in Canada.

Published

American tennis left Canada with real ranking momentum after Ben Shelton’s title run, Brandon Nakashima’s runner-up finish and Learner Tien’s semi-final result all produced upward movement in the ATP standings.

Shelton’s week in Montreal stood out for more than the trophy. After a disappointing summer that included early exits at the French Open and Wimbledon, the 23-year-old defended his Canadian Open crown with authority and did not lose a set. With the US Open coming into view, the left-hander said he sees the result as an important step forward.

He said in his post-match press conference, “For me, this week was a massive stepping stone; I would say even more than what I did in Toronto last year because of the way that I did it. I thought I was much more clinical, more focused.

“I was an elite returner at times. But the way that I was able to break serve, the fashion in which I did it, my ability to play defence and offence, I’m excited with the way that I’m progressing. Throughout this season on the hardcourts, I felt that each tournament I’ve gotten better and better.

“And obviously we’re still early in this US Open swing and have a lot of hard court tennis to play through the rest of the year. So I’m just really looking forward to see what kind of damage I can do moving forward.”

The official rankings reflect that progress. Nakashima has climbed nine spots to 22nd, Tien has moved from 19th to 12th, and Shelton is up four places to sixth. That return to sixth also makes Shelton the American No 1 again, moving him ahead of Taylor Fritz.

Elsewhere, Rafael Jodar rose four places to 11th, while Daniel Merida surged 23 positions to 40th. Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul both slipped three spots, to 23rd and 24th respectively.

In the live rankings, Alexander Zverev has once again moved ahead of the injured Carlos Alcaraz, who will not defend his Cincinnati crown because of an ongoing wrist injury. Jannik Sinner is also absent with a knee issue, leaving the field open.

Shelton embraces the chase after Canadian Open title defence

Shelton defends Canadian Open crown and says he “loves” chasing Sinner and Alcaraz in 2026.

Ben Shelton says he “loves” the pursuit of catching Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz after successfully defending his Canadian Open crown.

The 23-year-old backed up last year’s breakthrough Masters 1000 triumph in Toronto with another commanding run, closing out Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 7-6(4) in Thursday’s final in Montreal.

That result made Shelton the fourth man this century to defend the Canada title, joining Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. It also came without the loss of a set, a striking turnaround after difficult exits at the French Open and Wimbledon earlier in the season.

The left-hander has climbed back to sixth in the ATP Tour rankings and has moved ahead of compatriot Taylor Fritz to become the American No 1.

Although Shelton lifted the trophy without having to go through Sinner, Alcaraz or Novak Djokovic, he made clear that he views them as the standard he wants to meet.

When asked how much confidence does this title win give him to challenge Sinner and Alcaraz, he replied, “Yeah. I think it’s a constant process for me. I love having people out in front of me that I can chase.

“It’s been that way my whole career. I’ve never just been the best. I’ve always been chasing the best. Been a little bit behind, you could say, in my progression, and I think that’s pushed me in every aspect of my tennis game.

“And, you know, I’ll continue to work, to chase the guys that are in front of me. Obviously try to stay ahead of these young guys that are coming out on tour.

“I played a lot of young guys this week. The future of the sport, really, really high-quality players, and they’re not stopping. There’s so many more that are coming up.

“So I think that tennis is a game that you gotta keep improving or you get passed up, you get left in the dust. And so my job with the gifts that I have is to try to maximize, do as much as I can in the sport, become the best version of myself, and that’s where my focus lies.”

Shelton heads into Cincinnati as one of the leading names in the draw, with Sinner and Alcaraz both sidelined by knee and wrist injuries, respectively. He said the Montreal title was an important step, and felt his returning stood out as much as his serve.

“For me this week was a massive stepping stone, I would say even more than what I did in Toronto last year because the way that I did it.

Swiatek Ends Canadian Open With First Title of 2026

Swiatek beat Rybakina in Toronto, lifted her 12th WTA 1000 crown, and rose again in the rankings.

Iga Swiatek closed out the Canadian Open with her first title of the season, defeating Elena Rybakina 6-2, 6-3 in the final.

The result came just days after Swiatek had survived a three-set semi-final against Elina Svitolina in Toronto, a match that preceded an unusually candid reflection on the demands of her year. The six-time major winner did not hide how testing 2026 has been, saying: “It hasn’t been an easy season, probably the toughest one in my life. This week has been really positive and inspirational for me, and it always kind of shows that you need to keep going no matter what.”

Her win over the Australian Open champion delivered more than a trophy. It gave Swiatek her 12th WTA 1000 title, moving her beyond Aryna Sabalenka’s total of 11 and into second place on the all-time list since the category began in 2009. Only Serena Williams, with 13, remains ahead of her.

At the presentation, Swiatek used the moment to speak directly about the last year or so since her 2025 Wimbledon title. “I want to dedicate this title to everyone who is dealing with unfair judgement and hate,” she said. “Just keep pushing, keep growing, keep focusing on yourself because you know what’s best for you. And always remember what’s ahead and what might be possible.”

The title also brought an important lift in the live rankings. The 25-year-old rose three places to fifth after collecting 880 points, leaving her 500 points behind Coco Gauff in fourth. She has moved ahead of Mirra Andreeva, Karolina Muchova, and Linda Noskova. Belinda Bencic climbed to 12th, Diana Shnaider moved up three places, and Victoria Mboko dropped five spots after failing to defend her title.

In the WTA Tour Race, Rybakina now leads Sabalenka by 212 points, while Swiatek has climbed to 10th. Bencic and Sorana Cirstea also improved their positions.
